Opening of Alex Med Cultural Forum at the BA

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina opened this morning the “Alex Med Cultural Forum: Mediterranean Bonds that Unite Us”, which is organized by its Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med), the Arts Center, and the Exhibitions Department, in collaboration with the Anna Lindh Foundation, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Spanish Embassy in Cairo, the Hellenic Foundation for Books and Culture in Alexandria, the EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), and the Alexandria International Exhibition for Mediterranean Food. The forum runs from 21 to 23 October 2025, at the Library’s Conference Center and Plaza.

The forum was inaugurated by Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina; H.E. Mr. Sergio Carranza, the Spanish Ambassador to Cairo, Mr. Alessandro Giovanni, Director of the Public Policy Unit at the Anna Lindh Foundation; Dr. Mahmoud Hassan, Founder of the Alexandria International Exhibition for Mediterranean Food; Ms. Stavroula Spanoudi, Director of the Hellenic Foundation for Books and Culture in Alexandria; and Dr. Saad Moussa, Head of External Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture. The opening also featured a recorded speech by Ambassador Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, said that this year the Library is celebrating Alexandria's selection as the first Capital of Culture and Dialogue in the Mediterranean region, underlining Alexandria's leading role as a meeting point between civilizations and ideas.

He added that the forum provides an opportunity to explore the deep roots of our identity and participate in fruitful dialogues over two days, noting that the event revolves around three themes that connect the past, present, and future: common roots and Mediterranean identity, ongoing dialogue, and shaping the future.
