Naguib Mahfouz's Corner at the BA: A Living Memory of a Nobel Laureate

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has opened a special corner dedicated to the world-renowned writer Naguib Mahfouz, on the B3 level in the Library’s Main Reading Area. Prof. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the BA, stated that the corner is a permanent tribute to the legacy of the late Nobel Prize-winning writer.

Mahfouz's corner was established thanks to the valuable donations presented by his daughter, Ms. Umm Kulthum, to the Library in March 2024. They featured a collection of Mahfouz's belongings, in addition to his private library, which comprised nearly two thousand and four hundred books, ranging from his works of fiction in different languages to encyclopedias and dictionaries that Mahfouz acquired or were gifted to him, and which he kept at his home.

The donations also included Mahfouz's personal pens, his own rosary, his hearing aids, a bust portraying him, a number of portraits, and letters from Presidents Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat, and Hosni Mubarak.
